Howdy fellow drummers! In this article we are going talk about the 3 must know drumming parts of the hit song 'This is Me' Of course, this is all explained and demonstrated in the lesson, so go ahead and check it out here... [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VmlqigbtNQ[/embed] Lets break this song into 3 easy parts. The Intro... The intro of the song uses an accented single stroke roll on the snare drum... 1 e a u 2 e a u 3 e a u 4 e a u Lets go ahead and add the bass drum on the 1,2,3,4 And lastly, we can add some 5 stroke rolls to spice things up... The Chorus Here we have a really solid beat. The High hat is playing 8th notes, the snare is on the 2 and 4, while the bass drum in moving around a little. Ok, lets add some double bass drums to lift the energy and intensity of the beat. The Fill Here is a fill that occurs twice towards the end of the song. Watch the video for an example on this one.

  • How to create more talent

Are you born with talent or is it something we can create? This is a burning question that will often have people divided. Recently I ready an amazing book called 'The Talent Code' by Daniel Coyle. He shares his experience of travelling the world for a number of years where he spends time in what he calls 'Talent Hotbeds'. These are places; pockets in communities, where way above talent is created. After spending years in these talent hotbeds, interviewing and studying the 'talent' he noticed that no matter which 'talent hotbed' he was in around the world that there was 3 common denominators that seemed to be strongly evident. 1. Deep Practice They all practiced 'deeply'. This means practicing every day things that are challenging, making mistakes then correcting them. This process of deep practice wraps 'Myelin' around the circuit pathways that are responsible for the skills. Simply put, the more 'Myelin' that is wrapped around the circuit pathways, the stronger, faster and better the skill. 2. Ignition Ignition is something that drives a person at the core. Often, its a persons challenging experiences in their life that cause them to change their mindset. Ignition is where a person level of drive in a particular area is raised to the level of 'obsession' where they simply 'have ' to do something. This is important, as it gives them the energy and motivation to do daily 'deep practice'. 3. Master Coach To become the best, model the best. All great athletes, artist and others at the top of their game have had teachers and coaches who gave them the insights they needed to take their game to the next level and beyond. A master coach can see things we cant see. They can impart their wisdom and rituals that we can model and therefor get the same results as them, yet in a much shorter timeframe. Watch the video for more detailed answer on what creates talent. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8-oNqdPtrg&t=1s[/embed]

Where ever Tommy goes, I go... Tommy Igoe is without exception one of the greatest teachers I ever had. Funny enough I have never me him in person but have spent years practicing his amazing work in his books and dvds. In particular, his dvd titled 'Great hands for a lifetime' is a great product which can really improve a person hand technique big time if they put in the work. The great thing about the lifetime warm up is the way in which Tommy takes us through all the rudiments in one session... So, if you are serious about drumming, I want you to make sure you go out and get Tommy's amazing dvd, Great Hands For a Lifetime... no no, I'm not getting paid to say this. I'm saying this because I want you to get the amazing results I got too... Here is some footage of me playing though some of the Lifetime Warm ups... Check it out! Having played drums for around 30 years, you would think that I would have entire library of drumming books that I use. The truth is, that's only half true. You see, even though I have a massive library of drumming books, I have found that its best to go really deep with a few books than to dabble with hundreds of books. Let me say that again... "its best to go really deep with a few books than to dabble with hundreds of books" The following books are the ones I have really focused my time and attention on over the years... • How to play drums without wrist, arm, back and knee pain.

Playing drums without pain is one of the worst experiences ever... Well, almost... I can speak from experience in this area as I spent a fair few years playing drums in pain... I saw doctors, physios, massage therapist, Chinese doctors, chiropractors, surgeons... and LOTS of them too... Nothing really helped... Until... I read a book called 'Pain Free' By Pete Egoscue [embed]https://www.amazon.com/Pain-Free-Revolutionary-Stopping-Chronic/dp/0553379887/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1525584762&sr=1-1&keywords=pain+free+by+pete+egoscue[/embed] This book really changed my thinking. More, importantly I started doing the exercises and found I got my body back on track... I was now pain free from doing these exercises... The only challenge I had with doing these exercises was the amount of time it took to do these exercises... It often took 30-60 minutes... I then came across a great book that gave a set of exercises that had a very similar approach and result, yet in only 3-5 minutes... The book is called '3 Minutes to a Pain Free Life' [embed]https://www.amazon.com/Minutes-Pain-Free-Life-Groundbreaking-Prevention-ebook/dp/B000FCK4VS/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1525585250&sr=1-1&keywords=3+minutes+to+a+pain+free+life[/embed] So, if you are a drummer in pain (or simply in pain) I recommend checking out one of these books and trying it out... Or you could simply check out the exercises in the below video... [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAHpKaLis0E&t=347s[/embed] Dave Debono DD Drums
